Education Case Study: Brooks County Schools

Ensuring students have a comfortable and safe environment is critical to learning success. Read how ABMrejuvenated aging facilities, cut costs, and improved operations with limited funding.

Brooks County School System is a public school system in southwestern Georgia.

Challenge

Brooks County Schools’ six buildings were challenged by an aging infrastructure and reduced funding. With the majority of capital funds dedicated to paying an existing bond, administrators needed to address issues affecting the school system’s learning environment.

In three facilities, HVAC units outlived their useful life, while the Brooks County Board of Education J.H. Wells Education Center needed a new roof and, throughout the school system, security cameras and a VOIP system were needed.

Solution

To rejuvenate aging facilities and cut operational costs, the school system looked to ABM and energy performance contracting for help.

ABM implemented comprehensive infrastructure improvements through its Energy Performance Contracting Program, with additional operational improvements provided by ABM’s custodial services.

The customized solution is projected to save Brooks County Schools more than $10.5 million in energy and operating costs over a 15-year period, while providing custodial services.

Benefits

ABM helped the district make the operational changes to improve its facilities and learning environment, and cut costs—without cutting into the school system’s capital budget. Other benefits included:

• 15 new rooftop units at Brooks County Board of Education J.H. Wells Education Center.

• Upgraded HVAC units to high-efficiency HVAC units at several facilities.

• All HVAC units will be controlled by state-of-the-art HVAC control systems to maximize efficiency.

• Ventilation systems will be upgraded at each building, and each building will be sealed.

• The Education Center’s roof will be replaced and coated, and a sprinkler system will be installed in the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten wing.

• Security cameras, VOIP systems, new water fountains, and hand dryers will be installed across the entire school system.
